Welcome to the Berkeley Screening Center

The Berkeley Screening Center (BSC) is a campus wide research facility established in 2008 by the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley.  The BSC employs high-throughput technologies such as fluidics automation, robotics, high-content microscopy, and innovative software tools for data collection and analysis to enable UC Berkeley investigators to conduct data intensive screens.  The BSC specializes in the execution and analysis of whole genome small interfering RNA (siRNA) high-content imaging cell based screens and related assays.

The BSC offers access and training to high-throughput technologies

  • Assay development, screening, and hit confirmation
  • Liquid handling and plate/sample preparation
  • High-throughput and high-content imaging
  • Automated image and data analysis, bioinformatics and report generation

The BSC provides the following siRNA libraries for screening

  • Human Whole Genome, Kinase, and Ubiquitin-Related Genes
  • Mouse Whole Genome, Kinase, and Ubiquitin-Related Genes
  • Drosophila Whole Genome, Kinases & Phosphatases, Transcription Factors, and Ubiquitin-Related Genes
  • Custom plates

The BSC has new state-of-the-art equipment available for screening

  • MDS Micro Epifluorescent Microscope for automated imaging including environmental control (heat and CO2) and single channel fluidic additions.
  • PerkinElmer EnVision multilabel reader for absorption, luminescence, and fluorescence screens.
  • Several fluidic automation solutions to handle integrated low volume fluid additions, transfers and washing in 96 and 384 well plates.
  • Tissue Culture Facility.

All users must document compliance with EH&S rules and receive training prior to gaining access to the BSC.  Users will be charged by the hour for training & consultation.  Users will be charged for equipment use on a per hour or plate basis.  The Tissue Culture Facility can be use on a pay-per-use basis.
